Causes of Alzheimer's Disease

There probably is not one single cause of AD, but several factors affect each person differently:

  • Plaques and Tangles formed in the brain due to changes in the brain tissue are considered to be the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. People with Alzheimer's also can have lower levels of chemicals in the brain that carry complex messages back and forth between nerve cells. These lower chemical levels may disrupt normal thinking and memory by blocking the messages between nerve cells.
  • The risk of developing Alzheimer's increases with age. One out of every 10 persons 65 years and older is a victim of Alzheimer's disease, although early-onset victims may be in their 40s and 50s.
  • Family history is a key risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. People who have a brother, sister, or parent with Alzheimer's disease have a slightly higher chance of developing it themselves.
  • Women may have a higher risk of developing the disease than men
  • AD occurs more often among people who suffered traumatic head injuries earlier in life.
  • Lower educational levels and reduced mental activity may actually increase the risk of developing AD.
