Pseudo-allergies

Pseudo-allergic-reactions (PAR) usually exhibit the same symptoms as regular allergies, but unlike allergies are not caused by any allergens. For example:

  • A pseudo-allergy may be caused by an excess of histamine in the body – that usually happens after consumption of histamine-rich foods, such as some brands of cheeses or salami, taking some medications, or during certain liver and gastrointestinal diseases.
  • Sometimes a pseudo-allergy may be caused by an immune system dysfunction. The most common example is the occurrence of allergic symptoms during stress.
  • Metabolism-related conditions may also cause pseudo-allergic symptoms. Example: intolerance to aspirin.
  • Sometimes a combination of a pseudo-allergic-reaction with a real allergy results in a condition such as asthma and aspirin sensitivity. It occurs in 3-5% of all asthma sufferers, whose asthma gets worse if they take aspirin or any other analgesics.
