HIV Prevention

There is a lot of negative hype associated with HIV/AIDS amongst the general public which is usually very overblown. Most people know how they can or can't get HIV and yet shun casual contact with people who are known to be infected. In reality, these fears are absolutely unfounded and casual contact with HIV-infected people is absolutely safe.

However, there are a number of factors that increase the risk of infection during sex:

  • The presence of other sexually-transmitted infections (especially in the active phase): these are colloquially known as "virus gateways" because they result in sores or inflammations which greatly increase the risk of fluid transmission.
  • Cervical erosion is equally dangerous both for a woman and a man. For a woman it is an open viral gateway; for a man the risk is increased because more infected cells that come off the cervix.
  • The risk of HIV-infection during anal sex is much greater than for regular intercourse because of the probability of trauma to the colon and the anus.
  • Avoiding these risk factors, not sharing needles and using condoms during intercourse will greatly reduce the risk of HIV-infection.
