Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Treatment of ADHD A long-term treatment with a combination of medication, behavioral treatment, and community care is seen to be more effective than one treatment type only. Children respond differently to different medications and each child's personal history and medical reports must be carefully examined before suggesting a treatment. Mental health professionals conduct counseling sessions for the child, parents, and family members in order to help them cope with anger, stress, frustration, and depression, etc. This also help them cultivate develop the right attitude and skills to cope with ADHD. Psychotherapists teach ADHD to love and accept themselves. Behavioral therapists help the ADHD children change their thinking and coping with ADHD which results in behavior changes and improvement. With social skills training, ADHD children learn new behaviors like waiting in line, sharing their things, etc. Support groups help parents and family share ADHD related joys and sorrows as well as acquire parenting skills training which are given by therapists and is a key skill for dealing with ADHD children. Following the same schedule, organizing everyday things, using organizers, and other such consistent rules help ADHD children become well-adjusted adults. Teen years are very challenging for ADHD, since all the teen pressures and anxieties are doubled in ADHD teens. However, almost 50 percent of AHD children grow up to be ADHD adults, and most are not even aware they have a disorder. Medications like atomoxetine, group counseling, psychiatrist intervention, anti depressants like venlafaxine are also helpful.
