Treatments of Anxiety Disorders
OCD treatment requires exposure-based psychotherapy as well as special drugs. For severe cases of OCD, deep brain stimulation is also used. PTSD is effectively treated with medication and therapy as are social phobias. Normally, all anxiety disorders can be cured with medication and psychotherapy. Medication like antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, as well as beta-blockers do not cure the anxiety disorder but only help keep the symptoms under control.
Antidepressants like SSRI or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors helps cells in the brain to communicate with each other and is better known as Fluoxetine or Prozac, sertraline or Zoloft. SSRI may sometimes cause nausea or mild sexual dysfunction. Tricyclics are older versions of SSRIs which cause side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and an increase in weight. MAOI or Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors like phenelzine or Nardil help treat anxiety disorders but may also increase blood pressure at times. Anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines also help anxiety disorders but require higher doses for the same effect. Patients may also feel some withdrawal symptoms if they suddenly stop consuming benzodiazepines. The azapirone, Buspirone or Buspar is a relatively newer drug with side effects like headache and nausea. Beta-blockers like propranolol can prevent the onset of certain anxiety disorders like social phobia.
Psychotherapy involves counselling sessions with a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker to find out what caused an anxiety disorder in the first place. It involves Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy or CBT in which individual or group sessions are conducted for about 12 weeks.
